High Times in the Cordillera Central

If you're looking for a quintessential Colombian birding experience, you've found the right tour.

Colombia is a massive, diverse, and boasts more bird species than any other country. Feel a little overwhelmed? This route is the perfect starting point.

Hey bird and nature lovers,

For years, I dreamed of visiting Colombia to see its unique birds, vibrant cultures, and incredible sights. When I finally planned my first trip, I didn’t know where to start.

It wasn’t until my third visit that I explored the Coffee Triangle in the Central Andes, where I now run this tour. After traveling all over the country, I’m confident that my High Times tour offers the perfect all-around Colombian experience.

Imagine watching Mountain Toucans in the cloud forests while sipping hot chocolate you’ll never forget the taste of. That’s what I was doing when I took the photo at the top of this page. As we journey through rising elevations and habitats, we’ll see colorful tanagers, critically endangered Rufous-fronted Parakeets, and a variety of trogons, quetzals, motmots, puffbirds, fruiteaters, and more iconic Neotropic birds.

Participants often highlight two main birdy reasons to join this tour: First, we’ll see up to seven species of antpitta up close on family-owned lands. You’ll love these charismatic birds and the stories of sustainable tourism we hear along the way. Second, we’ll encounter more than 20 hummingbird species, including icons like the Long-tailed Sylph and the unbelievable Sword-billed Hummingbird.

Yesennia and I have formed a deep friendship and love our time together during this tour. Her knowledge of the region is unmatched. We’ll stay at some of my favorite lodges, enjoy amazing food, and marvel at the stunning scenery.

There’s so much to love in the Central Andes. Over the years, I’ve tweaked this itinerary to maximize our enjoyment of these wonderful and unique destinations. I’m feeling the magic of this tour as I write and can’t wait for you to experience it, too.

Is this the right tour for you?

  • We start at mid-elevations and rise clear beyond the treeline at the end of our tour, spending time in a variety of habitats in search of legendary birds of the Andes.
  • Photo opportunities are unmatched. If you bring a camera on your travels, you’re going to be oohing and ahhing over your shots here.
  • The food is fantastic, and the hotels are simply incredible. Our final hotel, Termales del Ruiz, will surely be one of the dreamiest accommodations you’ve ever experienced.
  • My tours strive to immerse ourselves in each location. I opt for quality time with each bird we encounter—we’re not just checking species off a list as fast as possible. We also spend time with other wildlife, plants, and anything that piques our interest.
