Hey bird and nature lovers,

I already said it in the introduction on this page: this tour combines the legendary and the extraordinary. It’s a thrilling mix of the absolute legends of the Andes – think Multicolored Tanager, Toucan Barbet, and White-booted Racket-tail – plus a host of birds that are localized and hard to get to. On top of that, the opportunities are great to find something extraordinary and unexpected.

Yes, this is a fantastic tour for birders. We’ll see new things each day, diversity will be high, and we’ll rack up quite a species list. But don’t let that intimidate you. We’re soaking each stop in, meeting the folks behind the scenes at each park and lodge, and taking our time to enjoy each bird we encounter. Plus, the lodges and food are excellent and memorable in the best of ways.

There are two exciting elements of this tour that I want to emphasize. First, we’re spending a day in San Cipriano, an isolated town that’s our gateway to the Chocó bioregion. San Cipriano was formed by escaped slaves who hid in the lush jungle until their freedom was ensured, and to this day, the only way in is by a train track converted to motorcycle-powered carts. Yep, we’ll be taking that ride. Once there, we’ll join up with a local guide to enter the national park that adjoins the town in search of Chocó specialties. It makes for an unforgettable day.

Second, we will have the incredible pleasure of birding with Yessenia on her home turf, which happens to be the most diverse hotspot in the most diverse country on the planet. Her family’s Montezuma Lodge is nestled within Tatamá National Park, and we’ll spend our first few days relishing in the area. I can’t wait.

Get ready for waves and waves of excitement and precious moments. Let the thrills begin!

Is this the right tour for you?

  • We start at mid-elevations and rise clear beyond the treeline at the end of our tour, spending time in a variety of habitats in search of legendary birds of the Andes.
  • Photo opportunities are unmatched. If you bring a camera on your travels, you’re going to be oohing and ahhing over your shots here.
  • The food is fantastic, and the hotels are simply incredible. Our final hotel, Termales del Ruiz, will surely be one of the dreamiest accommodations you’ve ever experienced.
  • My tours strive to immerse ourselves in each location. I opt for quality time with each bird we encounter—we’re not just checking species off a list as fast as possible. We also spend time with other wildlife, plants, and anything that piques our interest.
