We’ll focus on two main areas: New River National Park – our nation’s newest national park, named after what’s actually a very old river – and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, an expansive high-elevation wetland ecosystem. This convergence will provide us with opportunities for a combination of southeast US breeding birds like Swainson’s, Kentucky, and Yellow-throated Warblers and White-eyed Vireo; northern and western mountain breeding birds including Golden-winged and Mourning Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Winter Wren, and Swainson’s Thrush; and prairie species such as Henslow’s and Grasshopper Sparrow and Bobolink. Warblers will be the stars of the show, and we can expect 30+ species throughout our tour.
